What factors increase the risk for type 2 diabetes?

To find out your risk, check each following item that applies to you.

1. Your age is at 45 or older.

2. You are overweight or obese.

3. You have family history or your relatives, such as parents, brother, or sister with diabetes.

4. Your family background is African American, American Indian, Asian American, Pacific Islander, or Hispanic American/Latino.

5. You have had gestational diabetes, or you gave birth to at least one baby weighing more than 9 pounds.

6. Your blood pressure is 140/90 or higher, or you have been told that you have high blood pressure.

7. Your cholesterol levels are not normal. Your HDL cholesterol ("good" cholesterol) is 35 or lower, or your triglyceride level is 250 or higher.

8. You are fairly inactive. You exercise fewer than three times a week.
